What am I looking at?

A seismogram is the vertical motion of the ground, drawn over time. The ground is never perfectly still: traffic, wind, ocean waves and distant quakes keep every trace alive. What matters is the ratio — how much larger the current swing is than the station's own quiet level. That is the number we show, and the color of each triangle.

When a significant earthquake happens anywhere on Earth, its waves sweep across this map: nearby stations spike first, distant ones minutes later — the wave needs time to travel through the planet.

Honesty note: the traces are shown in raw instrument counts, not physical units. Converting to ground velocity would require deconvolving each instrument's response, which we do not do — so we never print nm/s. The shape and the relative level are true as shown.
